Categorization of stations for providing passenger amenities

3 Categories: NSG, SG, HG.

1. Non-Suburban Stations (NSG) – (High Revenue & High Footfall)

Category, (Annual Passenger Earnings, Footfall:

NSG-1:

above ₹500 crore

above 20 million

NSG-2 

₹100 to 500 crore,

above 10 million

NSG-3 

₹60 to 100 crore

above 5 million

NSG-4 

₹30 to 60 crore

NSG-5 

₹10 to 30 crore

NSG-6 

₹1 to 10 crore

2. Suburban Stations (SG) – (Serving mainly suburban areas)

Based on number of passengers handled per day.

SG-1 

> 30,000 passengers/day

SG-2

10,000 – 30,000 passengers/day

SG-3 

Up to 10,000 passengers/day

3. Halt Stations (HG) – (Small halts and low traffic points)

Category, Criteria (Earnings or Footfall)

HG-1

₹1–10 crore/year

HG-2

Less than ₹1 crore/year


Facilities for senior citizens, female passengers, and persons with disabilities (PWD)




2. Ticket Checking:

Types of checks

1. On-board Checks:

Carried out by Traveling Ticket Examiners (TTE) or Train Conductors.

Conducted while the train is moving.

Verify journey tickets, platform tickets, passes, concessional tickets, etc.

2. Station Checks:

Conducted by Ticket Checking Staff at platforms, entry/exit gates.

Prevents unauthorized travel, platform misuse.

3. Surprise Checks (Ambush Checks):

Conducted without prior notice by special squads.

Aim: detect habitual offenders, curb ticketless travel.

4. Mobile Squad / Flying Squad Checks:

Teams move across sections randomly.

Help cover wide areas beyond regular checks.

5. Joint Checks

Conducted jointly with RPF (Railway Protection Force).

Effective against ticketless travel, touts, unauthorized hawkers.

6. Special Drives:

Organized during festival seasons, peak periods, holidays.

Focus on routes with heavy rush or high ticketless travel.

1. Section 137:

Tampering, forging or altering railway tickets.

Jail up to 3 years

2. Section  138:

without ticket / Improper ticket / Beyond destination

Fare + ₹250 Excess Charge

3. Section 142:

Transfer or Resale of ticket

Fine up to ₹1000

4. Section 143:

False statement for concession

Fine up to ₹1000

5. Section  145:

Obstructing checking staff

Jail 6 months / Fine ₹1000

6. Section  145:

Nuisance / Drunkenness

Jail 6 months / Fine ₹500
